Commerce Township, MI

One of Commerce Township’s Favorite Wooded Areas: Robert H. Long Nature Park

Surrounded by water-loving tree species such as the red maple, silver maple, basswood and cottonwood, the Robert H. Long Nature Park is a haven for waterfowl, amphibians and fish – including a legally protected and rare fish, the Redside Dace. Visitors to the park can enjoy the variety of tree species, waterfowl, amphibians and fish from the comfort of handicap-accessible crushed limestone trails that meander though the park. The covered bridge at the center of the park offers a great viewing platform, to take in the natural splendor of the park and to spy on the diverse wildlife in the park – including fox squirrels, muskrats, raccoons, fox, turtles, ducks, and a large variety waterfowl and birds.

The park is well-known in the area as a wooded wetland that is home to many varieties of wildflowers – many of which bloom within or along the wetland areas. The area is also a haven for tree swallows and bats, which help to keep the area relatively mosquito-free. The plethora of trees in the park offer great nesting grounds for the varieties of swallows that make Robert. H. Long Nature Park their summer home.

Nature Takes Care of the Trees in Robert H. Long Nature Park. Do the Trees in Your Yard Need Any Care?

Nature does a great job of taking care of trees. Though not unheard of, trees in a natural setting rarely get diseases due to being malnourished. Their growth is typically regulated by other trees around them, and therefore trimming or pruning is not necessary.  And when they die – nature’s decomposers go to work, turning the tree back into dust after several years.

Trees taken out of their natural setting don’t have these advantages. The soils they are planted in may lack some needed nutrients or features that support the tree. Pests may target a weakened residential tree, causing it harm. Overall, these trees need additional care to keep them healthy and thriving.
