Kensington Metropark is one of the most popular wooded areas and recreational parks in the entire Metro Detroit region. Lying close to South Lyon, it is also the destination of choice for residents who want to get away from it all. The park features several large wooded areas, with miles of hiking trails that meander through the trees and deep into the woods. The park boasts over 20 different species of trees, from native species like the Maple and Dogwood to non-native but popular trees such as the Beech and American Elm. The park is a favorite place in the fall, as the forested areas turn to brilliant oranges and reds, bringing a bit of northern Michigan to the South Lyon area.
The park also attracts South Lyon residents and others from the area who enjoy hiking, running, or biking on the 8-mile paved trail that runs around the 1,200-acre Kent Lake. Kent Lake also offers two large beaches for visitors to enjoy, as well as opportunities for those who want to go sailing, canoeing, or fishing. The park has hundreds of acres of picnic areas, most with large picnic pavilions and open spaces for recreational activities. The park also has a full Nature Center that has educational programs and resources related to the South Lyon area.
