Ypsilanti, MI

One of Ypsilanti’s Favorite Wooded Areas: Hewens Creek Park

Ypsilanti’s Hewens Creek Park is a 191-acre oasis of wilderness set in a suburban setting that provides visitors a unique experience in nature. As the park is in a remote area, the park boasts a large variety of wildlife, including rabbits, fox, coyotes, deer, pheasants and migratory waterfowl. The park also has a thick vegetation cover, which provides housing for the smaller animals that populate the park. An intricate trail system support foot travel, and attracts many hikers and runner to the area. The trails pass through wooded swamps, old agricultural fields, a lowland forest and a natural prairie, traveling along a creek and encircling a ponds along the way.

Hewens Creek Park contains an impressive stand of mature trees, as well as a new growth forest that is taking over former agricultural areas that used to populate the park property. Aspen trees are common, as are Oak, Maple, Beech and Dogwood trees. The wooden swamp in the park has grown in the past few years, as many Ash trees have succumbed to the Emerald Ash Borer. Young forests are also present in Hewens Creek Park, with smaller and younger trees than the mature stands that dominate the park.

Nature Takes Care of the Trees in Hewens Creek Park. Do the Trees in Your Yard Need Any Care?

Nature does a great job of taking care of trees. Though not unheard of, trees in a natural setting rarely get diseases due to being malnourished. Their growth is typically regulated by other trees around them, and therefore trimming or pruning is not necessary.  And when they die – nature’s decomposers go to work, turning the tree back into dust after several years.

Trees taken out of their natural setting don’t have these advantages. The soils they are planted in may lack some needed nutrients or features that support the tree. Pests may target a weakened residential tree, causing it harm. Overall, these trees need additional care to keep them healthy and thriving.
